Activities and Excursions


Stone Town is rich with a mixed history of the Persians (Shirazis), Portuguese, Arabs, Germans, British, Indians and Africans.  It also has the history of being the centre of trade in East Africa with slavery and ivory trades taking the leading role.  The  Arab Sultans who dominated the Islands in the 19th and early 20th centuries have left their mark in the culture, religion, architecture and language on the people of Zanzibar and are most visible.  The whole area of Stone Town which covers the Ras Shangani Peninsula west of the town has a lot to offer and a walking tour is the best way to explore this mystical old town.

Enjoy an authentic Swahili cooking experience right in our Rooftop Restaurant Kitchen.  The tour starts at 3:30 pm with a walk to Darajani market where you will purchase your ingredients for your authentic Swahili dish.  Meet the local vendors and see the array of fresh and exotic produce on display at the market.  You will also visi t the local spice shop on your return to the hotel where you will be cooking a traditional Zanzibari dish in our open kitchen under the guidance of our experienced team of chefs.  After which you will enjoy a cocktail whist enjoying the magnificent sunset and enjoying  your meal.

The history of Zanzibar would be imcomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade.  They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar town, and a good tour includes the opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices.  A detailed description is given about a variety of spices and their uses in cooking and cosmetics.  Visitors will be fascinated by the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments.

Safari Blue has been running great days out in Zanzibar since 1996.  Safari Blue starts from Fumba village, south west of Stone Town.  Fumba is the most convenient location for exploring the wildlife, isolated sandbanks and rugged island scenery of the Menai Bay Conservation Area.  Safari Blue is not just a day out on a traditional sailing dhow with good food. Come prepared to get your feet wet, enjoy new experiences, make new friends, and most importantly have one of the most memorable days of your life.

The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east  region of Zanzibar and is home to the rare Red Colubus Monkey, which is endemic to Zanzibar.  These monkeys are full of character and roam freely.  They can also been seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve’s perimeter.  Jozani is home to other species including Skye’s monkeys, small buck and bush pigs.  Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

This full day leisurely guided tour takes you to Nungwi Village via Mvuleni Portuguese House where you can visit the Ruins of the Portuguese Barracks.  The beautiful white sandy beaches at Nungwi stretches for miles, it’s coupled with beautiful coral reefs ideal for diving and snorkeling.   You will also visit the turtle sanctuary which is used for rehabilitating  injured turtles and other marine animals back to before they are released back into their natural habitat.  Lunch will  be enjoyed at one of the restaurants on the beach.

Visit a small island  of the Western Coast of Zanzibar.  Prison Island was formerly owned by an Arab and used it for the confinement of refractory
slaves.  It was bought by General Mathews and the jail which still stands was built in 1893 and hence the name Prison Islands.  You can also see giant tortoises on prison island as well as swim, sunbathe and snorkel.
